Chancellor
Project Overview
Originally designed by Frederic Lasserre, founding director of the UBC School of Architecture, Chancellor House is a significant mid-century residence commissioned by Sydney M. Friedman, M.D., and Constance Livingstone Friedman, Ph.D. Following its sale in 2016, the home underwent an extensive restoration and renovation led by D’Arcy Jones Architects in collaboration with Postle Construction.
The project required an ambitious yet deeply respectful approach. Rather than replacing the house, the original structure was lifted and temporarily relocated on site to allow for excavation and the construction of a new foundation.
Once complete, the house was returned to its original footprint, preserving not only its proportions but also the architectural spirit and intent of Lasserre’s design. This process allowed the home to be substantially upgraded while remaining fundamentally the same house—refined, strengthened, and adapted for contemporary life without compromising its original character.
